I would consider an auto pilot that does not attach to the wheel (e.g. Autohelm), but rather direct to the rudder quadrant. Look at Raython and Furuno systems.

The central fitting for the backstay on my 1975 CS 27 is pulling out from the transom. Scary. Are there any specific modifications to the boat that are required to convert to a split backstay design?
Thanks,

I have a keel problem with my cs 22.I believe it is a corrosion problem that is not allowing it to lower or retract without external help.I am going to lift the boat out of the water ,pull the swing keel out sand blast it and epoxy it also clean up to keel pocket and also epoxy it then reassemble. it.What about replacing the pin that the swing keel pivots on, are they just a 3/4 inch stainless bolt. Please if any one can give me advice on this it would be highly appreciated. Respectfully Jim Alexander

A copy of the CS22 owners manual is posted on the CS22 Discussion group. The group is posted at: groups.yahoo.com You will need to search for and join the CS22 group. Once enrolled, check in the Files section of that group. You will find many helpful items, along with a scan of the original CS22 owners manual.

Do you have any idea where i might be able to get a copy of the manual? I plan on doing the majority of the work myself, and it would be nice to have some reference. Regarding the keel, is the pivet just a press fit pipe? From the outside it looks hollow. Can i just pound that out to remove the keel, or is there more to it than that?

Congratulations on your new sailboat! I also own an 74 CS22 that I've enjoyed for about a dozen years. My keel looks scabby like yours. They were modeled out of pig metal and rust badly in saltwater. I replaced the line with stainless steel airplane cable and braided line as I was uncertain of its age and reliability. The keel assembly will be removed, sandblasted and epoxied when the boat is painted, creating less drag and a more slippery surface. It will probably be treated with antifouling at the same time. It has never failed me but has a annoying clunk, clunk at anchor which can be usually remedied by raising or lowering it a bit. I may try to address this issue with bushings when it is removed. I would be happy to share any information or ideas with you and will try to answer any questions which you may have. I have an owner's manual and plans for a cradle. I have spent many $$ on refurbishing the original trailer as it is necessary for me to transport the boat from my mountain home to the coast. I have replaced the original mahogany rudder with a new one, and may consider selling the original for the right price. Happy to be of help in any way I can!

We have a problem with our simpson lawrence 1200 anchorman windlass motor and I was wondering if anyone knew what the compatible starter motor replacement might be. Great if someone can point me in the right direction.

I gave up on finding a dip stick for a 1000 series velvet drive. I finally bought one for one of the transmissions that they still support. It is exactly the lenth of the old dipsticks full mark. I drilled the end of it since it is a round aluminum extrusion. Tapped the hole and put a screw in it with loc tight. I then cut the screw off to give the same overall lenth as the old dip stick

It has been suggested by a number of people (my son; the owner of the boatyard where I store my 1988 CS 30; several boating friends too) that I may wanna think about replacing the engine of my boat ... that she's operating "on borrowed time." The engine has never failed me. I don't know how many hours she has on her. I never did the conversion to fresh water cooled. She's been in a salt water environment (coast of Maine) since being launched in 1992.
My question ... If I decide to repower my boat what can I expect in the way of costs ?? Should I stay with a Volvo-Penta or perhaps, go to something different ??
Any and all thoughts will be appreciated.

I am a new CS29 (1979) owner and many of my electics do not function.
The mast head light does not work and it would appear the the light is gounded to the mast. Is this correct? I thought that all boat systems were directly grounded to the battery. The mast head lamp is connected with lamp cord. I suspect that all could be retrofit.
Any words of wisdom would be most appreciated.
Thank you

I am a new owner (july 08) of a CS27. I have many things to do after haul out.
The strut bearing is worn and must be replaced, The shaft stuffing box should be repacked and the mast head is cracked port side above the backstay attachment. I have had the wet core repaired professionally but would like to learn to do some of these things myself.
I changed the diesel fuel filter myself and discovered how to bleed the fuel lines. It did not happen the way I expected on my SB8 Yanmar.
I was hoping to to be a registered subscriber by now but it has not happened yet.
I would appreciate any advice that my come my way.
Thank you

I put a Vetus 42 in my 36T to replace the Westerjunk 33. The engine mounts had to be modified, but the adapter plate to go between the Vetus (Mittsubishi) and the series 1000 velvet drive transmissions are available. It sits a little bit froward of the Westerjunk and is a bit lighter, so it is a plus reducing weight in the ends and thus pitching in rolling seas. The new mounts miss the mount bed steel plates in some cases, so holes have to be drilled in the mount bed sides in order to put large area washers and nuts.

Anyone know a parts supplier for the Velvet Drive series 1000 transmission? I'm looking for a dip stick.

Well I am almost ready to launch my cs27
It has been a hard slog between work and working on the boat.
I did find some good alternatives hat really worked out.
The headliner came out like NEW!. I found this product in Portsmouth VA.
It was a PVC hollow core. Cheap and very strong. The amazing thing was how easy it was to trim. I am a Paperhanger so it was a snap for me. I simply traced the old panels witha pencil then trimmed with a razor knife, the result was great.

My 1975 CS 27 has developed a leak that has damaged the headliner just to port of the companionway hatch. I can't figure out where the water is coming from.
1. Has any one experienced this before?
2. Has anyone ever removed and rebonded the panel on the cabintop.
3. Has anyone removed and replaced the cabin headliner? Seems like a big job. Any idea where to get the headliner material?

I'm about the purchase a CS 27. Something about the hull and cabin shape just pulls at me.
However, I am a little disapointed with the small v-berth. I'm not convinced it will sleep two comfortably. I'm contemplating raising the v-berth 6-8" to get more leg room by taking advantage of the flare of the hull in the bow. As an added benefit, this will create extra storage space.
Does anybody have any thoughts on whether this is a good or bad idea?

I have a '80 CS27 with a wheel. I would get rid of it in a New York minute and replace it with the original tiller (I have that too from the PO) except for the fact that we can make a "helmsman's " seat with a cooler and some cushions wiht the wheel and that works really well for my wife who has arthritic knees and the bracing required with the tiller would be hell on them.
But the wheel takes up too much room in the c/p when cruising (I take it off every night and you still have this thing taking up way too much room. When I am single handing her it's a real pain to come aroound the wheel to go forward in a hurry (it happens!). My previous boats have all had tillers including a 35' Rhodes design. The tiller is way more responsive and you get way better "feel" for the boat.
My advice would be to stick with the tiller!!

I have a CS 27 with a wheel. (It came with the boat). It's kinda neat for the kids, but it does cut down on space in the cockpit. Also, when the installation was done, pedestal to sole seal wasn't done properly, and allowed saturation.

I bought a CS27 last year that needed some serious TLC. Completely overhauling the interior since virtually all wood including the sole are bad. I have sailed Goergian Bay and the North Channel for over 20 years in my CS36T with shoal draft. Until recently I have not experienced any problems. I think you would be making a great mistake in putting a wheel in. The tiller takes less area than a wheel. Especially when in the slip. We have had atleast 9 adults in the cockpit for drinks at dock. We have raced with 3 plus the captain in the cockpit and handled quite comfortably. Plus you will never get quite the feel in a wheel as you do with a tiller. We have owned our CS27 for 8 years now and have done extensive work on it. We love everything about this boat especially during high winds. We have sailed down winds in 30 knots of wind and going 11 knots with the number 2 and a reef in the main. All I can say is awesome!! Have some great pictures if you want to see. Send me a email and will pass them on to you. Linda

I'm considering purchasing a SC 27' but I have a question and I wonder if anyone might have some thoughts on it. The boat I am considering has a tiller. I have sailed a number of boats with a tiller and while I like the "feel" of the helm under a tiller I would prefer a wheel for this boat because of the narrow cockpit and the problems in steering and comfort in the cockpit with more than one other adult aboard (I've sailed this boat a number of times and it is problematic). Is there anyone who could advise me on the feasibility of converting to a steering wheel (I would also move the throttle control to the wheel stand). Its cost, effects both neg/pos on the boats handling, etc. I would much appreciate it as this is only consideration holding me back from the purchase. The boat is in very good condition and I like the way it sails. Thanks for the help Rick DB

I own a deep draft C36T that I have sailed in the North Channel of Georgian Bay for the past 18 years. There are some marinas that are inaccessible with our draft and others that are no problem. Careful reference to the charts let's us sail just about anywhere. We have touched bottom three times, each as a result of knowingly going in to very thin water. I have never felt the deep draft is a liability in Georgian Bay, northern Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Hope this helps.

Hi, Have sailed on a large number of sailboats, including CS 27, 30, 33, 36T. Find these boats solid and of good quality. Am interested in the CS36T because of owners information and reviews in CY magazine and Practical Sailor. I would prefer the 6ft 3 in draft. However, in talking to owners, I get varying information as to the viability of the deep draft. In considering sailing on the east coast of Canada, deep draft is not a problem down there. In relation to the Great Lakes, in particular Georgian Bay, etc., some boat owners vow that the shallow draft is the way to go. Would you give me your experienced information on this topic? I would certainly appreciate it very much. Way to go for this new site!!!! James
