I'm considering purchasing a SC 27' but I have a question and I wonder if anyone might have some thoughts on it. The boat I am considering has a tiller. I have sailed a number of boats with a tiller and while I like the "feel" of the helm under a tiller I would prefer a wheel for this boat because of the narrow cockpit and the problems in steering and comfort in the cockpit with more than one other adult aboard (I've sailed this boat a number of times and it is problematic).
Is there anyone who could advise me on the feasibility of converting to a steering wheel (I would also move the throttle control to the wheel stand). Its cost, effects both neg/pos on the boats handling, etc.
I would much appreciate it as this is only consideration holding me back from the purchase. The boat is in very good condition and I like the way it sails.
Thanks for the help

I think you would be making a great mistake in putting a wheel in. The tiller takes less area than a wheel. Especially when in the slip. We have had atleast 9 adults in the cockpit for drinks at dock. We have raced with 3 plus the captain in the cockpit and handled quite comfortably. Plus you will never get quite the feel in a wheel as you do with a tiller. We have owned our CS27 for 8 years now and have done extensive work on it. We love everything about this boat especially during high winds. We have sailed down winds in 30 knots of wind and going 11 knots with the number 2 and a reef in the main. All I can say is awesome!! Have some great pictures if you want to see. Send me a email and will pass them on to you.

I was thinking the same thing about the wheel when I recently purchased my 27. The guy I bought it from also said not to bother with a wheel. I will be working on her this fall and winter ready for launch in the spring. I would love to see some photos of a 27 interior and sailing.

I have a CS 27 with a wheel. (It came with the boat). It's kinda neat for the kids, but it does cut down on space in the cockpit. Also, when the installation was done, pedestal to sole seal wasn't done properly, and allowed saturation.

I have a '80 CS27 with a wheel. I would get rid of it in a New York minute and replace it with the original tiller (I have that too from the PO) except for the fact that we can make a "helmsman's " seat with a cooler and some cushions wiht the wheel and that works really well for my wife who has arthritic knees and the bracing required with the tiller would be hell on them.
But the wheel takes up too much room in the c/p when cruising (I take it off every night and you still have this thing taking up way too much room. When I am single handing her it's a real pain to come aroound the wheel to go forward in a hurry (it happens!). My previous boats have all had tillers including a 35' Rhodes design. The tiller is way more responsive and you get way better "feel" for the boat.
My advice would be to stick with the tiller!!

I am considering buying a CS 27 and I see that it has overboard head discharge only. Has anyone fitted one with a holding tank?

I'm about the purchase a CS 27. Something about the hull and cabin shape just pulls at me.
However, I am a little disapointed with the small v-berth. I'm not convinced it will sleep two comfortably. I'm contemplating raising the v-berth 6-8" to get more leg room by taking advantage of the flare of the hull in the bow. As an added benefit, this will create extra storage space.
Does anybody have any thoughts on whether this is a good or bad idea?
